The Mustangs got back to their winning ways on Saturday night and earned another mark in the RMAC victory column versus the Regis University Rangers (30-17, 31-29, 19-30, 30-19). The Mustangs improved to 9-1 in the RMAC and 13-5 overall. The Rangers are now 8-11 overall and 6-5 in conference.
WNMU never gave up the lead in the first game and took it quite easily. The team was led by freshman Natali Murdock (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle High School) (Phoenix, AZ) who tallied five kills on six attempts and had no errors in the first. The Mustangs hit a whopping .393, whereas, the Rangers hit only .161.
The Rangers did not give up the second game without a fight as the Mustangs could not get around RU's block at first. RU registered four blocks in game two. The two WNMU freshmen Alzie Auelua (Aiea, HI/Radford High School) (Aiea, HI) and Murdock continued to connect with the ball, however, after combining for 13 kills of the team's 18.
After the eight-minute intermission, the Mustangs could not keep the ball in the court. The Rangers served five aces to the Mustangs, and WNMU struggled in hitting with seven errors and only ten kills. The Mustangs never saw the lead, dropping game three, 19-30.
Senior Lindsay Morrison (Rio Rancho, NM/Rio Rancho High School) (Rio Ranch, NM) rallied the team together in game four after getting four kills of her own. Murdock chipped in with five kills to seal the victory.
Courtney Heiser (Tempe, AZ/Marcos de Niza High School) (Tempe, NM) added to her impressive career stats with 43 assists in the win. Junior Jessica Lindgren (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola High School) (Albuquerque, NM) was the lone Mustang to reach double-digits in digs (13).
